    MBC win Michell Cup!

I’ve just been informed that MBC have won the 2008/9 Michell Cup, ahead of First and Third!

    From the CUCBC website:

“The Michell Cup, presented in 1923 in memory of Dr. R. W. Michell, be awarded by the CUCBC to the Boat Club giving the best performance on the river during the course of the academic year.”

A massive well done to all crews!

    Last day of Mays

Thank you to all Friends who came to support MBC on the last day of racing. The turnout was fantastic, my Pimm’s mixing skills were stretched to their limit (sorry about the brief period in the afternoon when we ran dry – I collected extra supplies as quickly as I could!) and we were treated to some fabulous racing. Special mention must go to the 1st Men and 2nd Women who both won blades – congratulations!

The evening barbecue at the boathouse was also the lucky recipient of excellent weather, and it sounds like there’s quite some enthuisasm for a similar event in the future. The Bumps Supper is back in its regular Saturday slot next year, so unfortunately that rules out a direct repeat, but any suggestions for alternative dates or locations are more than welcome.

Have a great summer, and if you’re a graduating rower please join the Friends now before you forget. There’s a link to the membership form on our front page.

    May Bumps Events 2009

    Dear Friends,

This year’s May Races are taking place from Wednesday 10th to Saturday 13th June, and MBC are looking to cap off an exceptional year with one final, massive haul of bumps. We have at least three crews racing in the men’s divisions and another three in the women’s divisions, with the prospect of adding to this following next Friday’s getting on race.

If anyone is in Cambridge and free to shout from the bank, then full details of the starting order and division times can be found on the CUCBC website.

To mark the final day of racing on Saturday 13th June, we’ll also be holding two special events:

Marquee in Caius Meadow – from 1pm (last race 5:45pm)

As has become tradition, MBC will have a marquee in Cauis Meadow. Refreshments will be on offer, as will a punt ferry to carry you over to the towpath side.

The Stewards and Officers would be delighted to see as many Friends there as possible to cheer on our crews.

    Access is via Fen Ditton:
    - Go past the Ancient Shepherds
    - Keep left of the War Memorial
    - Fork right into Jesus Field for cash parking

Barbecue at the Boathouse – from 7:30pm

In a break with tradition, the Club are having their Bumps Supper on Sunday night. To fill in the resulting gap on Saturday evening we will be holding a post-Bumps barbecue at the boathouse from 7:30pm. Current members of the Club will be there, and have kindly invited the Friends to join them.

Tickets for Friends are £10 each and must be purchased in advance, with all proceeds going to MBC. The ticket price covers food and soft drinks. If you’d like to attend, please reply to:

Cheques should be payable to “Friends of Magdalene Boat Club”.

    Best regards,
